Three former members of the Recreation and Parks Advisory Board were recognized recently for efforts "above and beyond" simply serving on the board. Recreation Manager Karen Bourque said.
One fought to make a new pool at Crystal Springs, one gave limitless time to youth sports and another promoted arts and cultural activities for youth.
E. Martin Davidoff was the recipient of the RPAB’s "Crystal Tree," its highest award, which has gone to only about a dozen people since it was conceived in 1991, Bourque said. Davidoff was the main force behind the effort to get a new pool at the township’s Crystal Spring Family Aquatic Center. The new pool, Sapphire Bay, was completed in time for last summer’s season after a lengthy debate.
A certified public accountant and attorney, Davidoff has been involved with many financial and other issues with the RPAB, such as advocating lower fees for some of the Recreation Department’s programs. He served from 1992 to 1998 on the RPAB, a 15-member body that advises the council on recreation policies and suggests new facilities and programs.
Edith Sporn and Glenn Palmer received plaques for their efforts. Bourque said Sporn has been an advocate for youth, working for youth on the township’s Arts Commission. She served on the board from 1993 to 1998.
Palmer was a member of the Coalition of Athletic Organizations, an umbrella group that encompassed all youth sports. It worked on issues confronting the leagues such as use of fields or conflicts between two organizations.
